African Descent Festival aim to showcases the best in African and African Descent music, art, crafts, culture, African Descent food and Fashion Show. Now in its  8th year, the festival has proven to be one of the most popular live music and cultural event with calibre of professional artists that presented at its stages annually.
The African Descent Festival has grown to become the top largest Festival for people of African Descent in Western Canada and Vancouver British Columbia summer special events, which brings all People of African Descent together in Vancouver to celebrate history and culture for people of African Descent. The annual festival will be held on the third week of July at Vancouver BC at Thornton Park 1166 Main Street, Vancouver, BC, and is open from 10am until 9pm Saturday and Sunday.

The African Descent Festival has worked tirelessly to create a welcoming event recognized by municipal, provincial and federal governments for excellence in fostering and enriching a positive sense of community across the Lower Mainland. The African Descent Festival (ADF) was held on July 17 and 18, 2021. The festival was a live event, taking place in-person at Thornton Park, Vancouver, and streaming to the rest of the world online. This was a major feat, as the ADF was given the ok to have an in-person event at the last minute, and the ADF was essentially the first in-person festival to take place in Vancouver, post-pandemic! It goes without saying that after one-and-a-half years of staying at home, people were thirsty to return to live music events. The ADF was a great success with around 11,000 guests attending the event at the park, and a reach of over 250,000 people on Facebook. The festival’s focus is to promote an arts and culture event for people not only of African Descent but for Afrophiles alike in Vancouver and beyond.

This year festival will be on July 16, 17 of 2022 for both live streaming and in person in case government allows gathering again. The festival’s program aims to bring thousands of Vancouverites and Canadians together in hopes of celebrating diversity in this city and promoting the presence of Africans within the city. Having worked with the City African Descent Cultural Centre at Downtown Eastside, which seeks to build for African Descent Cultural Centre in Strathcona in Vancouver historically African Descent settlement community, there’s a growing appetite from the community at large to see the vibrant community of Vancouver recognize the impact and involvement within the history of this city. Rooted in Hogan’s Alley/Strathcona Downtown Eastside as well as Vancouver Lower Mainland, the goal is being on ground within the community so that there’s a much more connected relationship with the community. The scalability of this festival to promote local talents within the community as well as try to encourage a larger presence of locals as the African Descent Festival is now looking to integrate more communities. Through a relationship with the city of Vancouver, the organization has been able to take part in a wide range of consultation towards making sure that ample feedback is given to ensure fair representation at all levels.

Local artists present their talents by dazzling the crowd with live performances (including poets, storytellers, actors, dancers and musicians), live painting, dance and drum cafes – accessible on both a main stage area, as well as smaller more intimate performance stages throughout the site. Stations are also set up throughout the site to cater to the different interests of the attendees, including a marketplace for hand-made crafts, African clothing, jewelry etc; African food vendors; a children’s play area, a community fair, beer garden etc. An educational component of the festival will showcase a short documentary about the history of Hogan’s alley followed by a guided tour of the Strathcona area. New to the 2019 Festival will be the addition of Carnival, an African fashion show, live painting, brass band, various indoor kickoff and “after party” events to augment the activities at main site; as well as a community parade component, to build on the festival’s community participation.
The African Descent Festival is an arts and cultural festival designed to be a tribute to the African Descent community that thrived Vancouver Downtown, Strathcon Downtown Eastside for several since decades from 1859 and British Columbia since 1858; producing world-class athletes, musicians, entertainers, restaurants, entrepreneurs, community builders and political activists and the African immigrant communities – both in that area and the Lower Mainland at large. The festival aims to create a platform to bring African art and culture and the diverse communities within Greater Vancouver to showcase and share their cultural heritage.
There is no better time like the present to celebrate African Descent because the United Nations declared 2015-2024 the International decade for people of African descent.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT

The Festival is a FREE and inclusive community event – we welcome immigrants, refugees, people of African descent, and the general public. The ADF is the only event of its kind that offers a wide ranging opportunities for the presentation and enjoyment of Afro-Canadian artistic expression. We strive to: provide an opportunity for local citizens to engage in their community through local African professional arts and heritage; to forge relationships with a range of local partners in their support of the festival event; and inspire and support the presentation of the work of local African Descent – artists, artisans, performers.

The African Descent Festival is the largest free festival arts and cultural event in Western Canada. The 2021 African Descent Festival attracted a very large number of participants over two days, an increase of 30% from the previous year. This community benefit translates to a value for the Greater Vancouver community. Given the rapidly growing popularity of our event, we anticipate the future growth of the festival audience and community partners as well as local artists. The 2021 African Descent Festival was both an outdoor live and online broadcasting event social distance due to the impact of Covid-19 and attracted to close twenty-five thousand people online which made this festival one of the largest live online broadcast events in Vancouver for 2021.

ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSIVENESS

African history goes back to before the birth of Canada (1620’s); in BC and Vancouver, people of African descent people are recorded back to the mid 1800s – yet none of this history is well-represented in Canadian society, making it a largely unknown part of Canada multiculturalism. Events like the African Descent Festival aspires to bridge this gap – creating a platform for participating cultural groups to share history and heritage, as well as inspire community engagement and understanding of contemporary Afro-canadian arts.
In the 21st century, diversity, openness, and tolerance are vital national assets. They strengthen our societies and expand our capacity to meet our shared challenges and to seize the new opportunities before us. As we mark this International Decade for People of African Descent, the festival is an important showcase of the cultural strength and contribution of the Vancouver African descent diaspora.
The ADF, is highly inclusive: that brings together not just people of African descent, but also other Canadians of diverse ethno cultural, gender, sexual orientation, class, age, ability, disability backgrounds. For the festival event, we expect a wide range of participants from African, Caribbean African and Afro Pacific states, as well those of African Descent in Canada; as well as various community organizations and multicultural groups, creating an unparalleled education and exposure to African Descent arts, culture and heritage.
The Festival site is immediately adjacent to a major bike route and public transportation hub (Main Street Skytrain Station) which provides easy access for attendees throughout the Lower Mainland. The site is also adjacent to the City’s main bike routes as well. The site is also fully wheelchair accessible, and we utilize sign languages interpreters. The ADF is comprised of both French and English speakers and we use translators in both languages.
The ADF is promoted through a wide range of methods – including posters, brochures, media releases and through a variety of social media platforms. The event also enjoys extensive word-of-mouth promotion, and support by community group partners.

SUSTAINABILITY & LASTING IMPACT

The ADSBC is governed by a solid Board of Directors, with the festival being led by a team of experts from both the African and Canadian communities, as well as experienced staff consultants. We also enjoy the support of over 100 volunteers that assist in the successful delivery of the festival event, as well promotional activities such as and website design and maintenance.
The festival management is led by Yasin Kiraga; Executive Director and founder. Yasin is a professional event planner, event promoter and producer with ten experience in events productions, planning and promotion. Yasin has worked in major events production companies, events managements, artist bookings and live event promotions with many international events producers, planners, and high profile artists from African, Caribbean and other international and Canadian artists.
To ensure the success of each annual event, the ADF planning committee oversees and implements a variety of strategies. The Committee utilizes and extensive planning calendar for the event’s management, which begins a full year in advance of each festival, with explicit weekly and monthly goals; and actively track achieved milestones throughout the year (. For success these strategic measures are designed and implemented by festival Executive & Artistic director working with the larger planning committee, with input from other festival experts. The ADF also produces a detailed master plan document, as well as a separate marketing and communication strategy. Currently the African Descent Festival planning team has contacted and shortlisted a variety of different community organizations, artists, bands and groups, who have all expressed interest in participating, and/or have been confirmed to date. Overall the festival plan is approved and in place – with only a few details still needed to be finalized.

The ADF’s success during the past years is due largely to its team of dedicated and hardworking volunteers. We have so far met with over several volunteers and we expect number to increase who will be interested to work for the event, and we screen process by our Volunteer Coordinators every year who come from various parts of Vancouver, BC and other areas.

The Society has worked hard to develop comprehensive and growing support for the festival over the past four years, and we are encouraged by the very positive response we have received to date. Funding sources have included community and corporate support, as well as consistent grant funding from the municipal, provincial and Federal government support the festival great work in promoting Multiculturalism, Arts & Heritage and diversity. ADSBC is currently working with Vancouver consultant to assist the organization in developing capacity building for sponsorships, funds; grants helped us build new funding sources over the past year. We also plan festival events with realistic budget assumptions and projections that demonstrate a diversified revenue base.
The African Descent Festival is increasingly gaining wide range of community support (local, national and international). For the 2021 year, the ADF enjoyed the support of a wide range of the community including: local media (e.g. 24+ media sources – radio, TV and newspapers; 50+ social media / websites / bloggers; print adverting and promotion agencies, 15 tourism companies); local businesses (e.g. donations from Vita Coco, Rehma Africa Art Craft, Flight booking agencies); not-for-profit organizations (e.g. 100+ community events who advertised and promoted the festival for free including Folk Festival, Caribbean Days Festival, Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Ottawa Africa Festival, Regina Afrofest, Afrofest Edmonton; 28 community/information booths; and 70 African and Caribbean community associations); and local schools – all of whom contributed significantly to the success of our festival.

The festival will focus on local artists this year, to lay a framework of welcoming the international community to Vancouver to celebrate with our local artists as well. With the vision of showcasing Vancouver to the world, this year will feature a range of activities compiling our yearly expanding program, with the festival spreading to two days, the idea will be to commence with a focus on History, Storytelling, Poetry, and Crafts, there will be face painting, and general booths for Showcase their culture. The idea of the first day will be geared more towards an community building and less of performance arts. Poets, Storytellers, and Actors will take main stage on the first day, there will be opportunities for food vendors to sell their cuisine as well! We will have tour guides to lead guests who are interested in learning about the history of Hogan’s Alley and other parts of the city within this event. Guests will be able to register on our website to be a part of the festival! The second day on the other hand will be much more “hype”, as the artists coming into town will be very expensive, the Saturday programming will be changed into more of a celebration focusing less on the intermingling and more unto the stage setup! Vendors, Food and Beer Garden will be setup for the community to come and enjoy music from phenomenal performers, live painting, dance and drum cafes. There will be face painting as well as other vibrant attractions.
